After The Merge: The Honest Guide to Getting Free Ethereum

After The Merge The Honest Guide to Getting Free Ethereum

When Ethereum completed “The Merge” in September 2022, not only did it make some adjustments to the protocol but uprooted an entire industry in the process.

Proof-of-Work mining, which previously allowed anyone with a GPU computer to mine ETH, was instantly replaced by Proof-of-Stake validation. This change was one that instantly rendered the GPUs being used by many people around the world useless for mining.

    Why GPU Mining Died Overnight?

In the pre-Merge era, security on the Ethereum blockchain was achieved through miners performing computations, and the most suitable devices for doing so were GPUs due to the efficiency of their hashing algorithm.

Now, this entire process has changed as it involves validators staking ETH rather than spending their electricity on performing computations.

Effectively, there have been no block rewards for those with GPUs; no mining pools rewarding ETH anymore, and GPUs are being sold off by miners on the secondary market en masse due to losses incurred.

This is exactly why gamified versions have received such immense attention in the recent past. Rather than attempting to emulate real mining – something that is no longer possible with ETH – the ability to obtain free ethereum on RollerCoin transforms the entire concept: you create a mining farm within a gaming environment, increase your power generation capacity through gaming and collect crypto, including ETH, when the minimum limit is reached.

It’s not mining in the technical sense, nor does it replace an income for anybody, but it’s absolutely free to try, needs no equipment, and allows anyone interested in cryptocurrency to make some ETH without risking anything.

What Actually Remained After the Merge?

With the end of mining, those trying to obtain ETH at no or reduced cost were presented with an even more limited array of methods to do so:

    • Faucets – websites that pay small amounts of ETH (sometimes even less than a fraction of a cent), in return for viewing ads, completing captchas, or doing other easy tasks. They exist, but the payments are too low to be profitable.
    • Staking – the direct replacement for mining, but with a steep barrier: running a full Ethereum validator requires 32 ETH, worth tens of thousands of dollars. Pooled staking services lower the entry cost, but you’re still buying ETH, not earning it for free.
    • Airdrops – Some protocols incentivize early users through token drops; however, sometimes it includes ETH or ETH-based assets, but this is highly unpredictable and requires participation in certain ecosystems.
    • Mining Simulators or Play-to-earn – browser-based games where you can build your own mining rig and earn some amount of crypto without investing any money at all.
    • Task-based crypto websites – those websites which pay their users in terms of ETH by performing microtasks, somewhat analogous to faucets but a little more on the side of tasks.

Among these, only staking can be called comparable to mining, as it involves direct network security, but the 32 ETH entry level is too high for most people.

    Setting Realistic Expectations

Neither will provide anyone with the fortune they are looking for, but it should be said clearly that there is no such thing as a free lunch where GPU mining was once.

Faucets give out coins worth mere cents. Staking requires funds not everyone can afford. The only option left is piecemeal accumulation of ETH exposure.

    Setting Realistic Expectations

    The Bottom Line

The Merge was not the end of the dream of making money from nothing; it was merely a transition. People pursuing “free ETH” now have to forget about their fantasies of having a GPU rig printing coins and replace them with a more realistic one of earning tiny amounts through faucets, mining simulations, or staking. Being aware of where exactly you fall will save you a ton of wasted time.
