Today marks the 25th anniversary of the PlayStation console, as Sony released the original PS on this day 25 years ago in 1994. Now, PlayStation has also been awarded as the best selling home video game console brand ever by none other than Guinness World Records.
“We’re thrilled to be certified as the best-selling home video game console brand ever, with over 450 million units sold across the original PlayStation, PS2, PS3 and PS4 as of Nov. 7, according to @GWR,” PlayStation tweeted on Tuesday.

To celebrate the occasion, an event was held in Tokyo on December 3, attended by Sony Interactive Entertainment President and CEO Jim Ryan and former CEO Ken Kutaragi, who is often referred to as ‘The father of the PlayStation’, mostly for his work behind the development of the original PS launched by Sony 25 years ago.
Sony also wrote on the official blog that the original PlayStation console sold 100,000 units in Japan on its first day of sale. Besides, it was also the first home-console ever to sell over 100 million units.
However, the PlayStation 2 surpassed its predecessor to become the best-selling console of all time, with sales of a staggering 155 million units. The sales of the PS3, though, were quite underwhelming in comparison selling just 87.4 million units. That said, the PlayStation 4 upped the ante again, with sales of 102.8 million units.
“Starting from a humble beginning as an upstart within Sony, Ken Kutaragi and team delivered on a vision to elevate video games as a form of entertainment that everyone could enjoy, and to make a platform for game developers to express their creativity,” Ryan wrote in a blog post marking the console’s 25th anniversary.
We’ve come a long way since the launch of the original PlayStation console. And now, we’re just a year away until the nex-gen PS5 arrives in December 2020, which will be the most powerful console to date.
