Karwa Chauth Vrat Katha

Karwa Chauth was first observed by Veervati after her marriage. But she soon fainted because of not eating. Seeing her pitiful condition her 7 brothers played a trick so that their sister would break the fast.

One of her brothers climbed up a tree with a lamp and sieve. When Veeravati gained her consciousness back, her brothers told her that the moon already rises. The trick played by her brothers was successful as she broke the fast. But this caused her, her husband’s life as she did not offer argha to the real moon.

Her husband’s death was too much for her to bear. Seeing her inconsolable state, Goddess Indrani appeared and told her to observe Karwa Chauth vrat every month till the next Karwa Chauth. If she is successful in doing so, her husband will back to life. Veeravati followed the karwa Chauth vrat devotedly every month and brought her husband back to life.

How to break karwa Chauth vrat?

When the moon is out in the night sky, it’s time to break the fast. During this time husband and wife go to the balcony or terrace from where they can see the moon. The wife uses a sieve to see the moon. She then uses the same sive to see her husband and prays for his long-life and well-being. Many women even light-up a small diya and place it on the sieve and perform the ritual.

Looking at the moon through the sieve is symbolic of the fact that she wants a long life for her husband just like the moon. She also wants other qualities of the moon in her husband like peace, calmness, and beauty.

After the moon-sighting ritual is over, the wife is offered water by her husband. This is how the husband helps to break the fast. Both of them then enjoy their dinner together and also with other members of the family.
