On the very first day of the Pongal festival, which is also called ‘Bhogi’, the Indra God is worshipped to convey a good amount of rain regularly on the earth. At dawn, people burn a bonfire with logs of wood to inaugurate the festival. The second day of Pongal is called ‘Thai Pongal’ which celebrates the worship of Sun God. On this, people take a morning bath, draw rangolis and kolams. The third day of Pongal is called ‘Mattu Pongal’ which celebrates the worship of cows. The cows are decorated with garlands and bells. The last day of Pongal is called ‘Kaanum’ wherein the leftover Pongal dish along with betel nuts, betel leaves, and sugarcane are kept in the open on a turmeric leaf. Women also perform worship for the prosperity of their brothers.
