Story of Holika Dahan
According to stories and beliefs, Holika was blessed by Brahma with the power of being immune to fire. In other words, she can never be hurt by fire.
Brother Hiranyakashyap and the father of Prahlad ordered Holika to sit on fire with his son so that he can burn him to death. To save his life Prahlad continued to pray to Lord Vishnu who finally saved his life from burning fire.
The protective shawl of Holika flew to cover Prahlad’s body. This left Holika unprotected and as a result, she was burned to death. Well, this is the mythological story behind the celebration of Holika Dahan. This story is still followed by the people and they burn jau to depict the burning of Holika.
